When developing a communications system it is important to set the focus on the reliability of the overall system. This is necessary to stay in control of the satellite. We decided to use the standards for telecommunication defined by the biggest international space agencies.
The communications system includes the groundstation, the communications module inside the satellite, the onboard bus and the forwarding of the data from the groundstation to the mission control center.
To keep the development costs low and to be able to develop prototypes fast, we decided to use software defined radios and high level programming languages like Python. Furthermore we are using commercial of the shelf components which are not certified for use in space.
